Santa Barbara Historic Landmarks Commission
Dear Commissioners:
Citizens Planning Association, a countywide, not for profit organization, has worked since 1960 to endorse and participate in the promotion of good urban planning. One of the core issues we promote is protection of our heritage and beauty.
CPA has been actively studying proposals that come before your body for many decades. Our board supports the designation for the parkway of State Street between Mission St. and Constance as a City Landmark. An example of the City Beautiful ideals of the early 20th century, the Parkway (or median) is a well-respected and admired feature of the original upper State Street between Mission Street and Constance Avenue. It represents the city’s large-scale beautification efforts of the post World War I and pre-1925 earthquake periods.
The Parkway should be protected and preserved for our residents and visitors to admire and enjoy. Our economic benefit depends on preservation of our city’s heritage and character.
Please adopt a resolution to recommend Landmark status for the State Street Parkway.
Sincerely,
Marell Brooks, President
Citizens Planning Association
