We support a continuance of this item until the February date.
A continuance will allow for more information to be included from both the CHP and Caltrans regarding a study of traffic incidents in recent months which occurred along the first 10 miles of the proposed 160 mile rucking route.
Slide please. This slide shows the route between the project site and VSFB. In the past few months, there have been at least a dozen accidents along here. Which included at least 6 fatalities. CHP and Caltrans details should be added to the staff report as they can discuss engineering and safety concerns.
Three weeks ago there was a single car accident ¼ mile from the project entrance.
Details. Suny clear day, 1:30 PM. Drunk driver; speeding; chase; passing multiple cars on HGRd; hit a tree; car split in half; two passengers were killed.
HG rd was closed for two days for clean up and study by the authorities. The family has erected a roadside memorial . They were told they could not erect the memorial at the crash site as the road at that spot is too dangerous for added distractions. They started the memorial at the corner of Burton Mesa Blvd. and HGRd. This is a copy of the pic they have erected with a night solar light.
Please slide. The victims were Luna, 7 mo and stella aage 3. They died on harris grade road very close to the entrance of the LOGP.
On Hwy 1, two days later at the ST. Lucia Cyn intersection, there was a 4 car accident. One injured was helicoptered to Cottage. 3 other injured people were taken to local hospitals. Car caught on fire in the brush.
One month earlier, at the same location, there was a two car accident at the same intersection. This was at least the 6th accident at this location. In the past two years. This was on a Sunday afternoon. Grandparent was drivng and pulled out onto Hwy 1 and car hit by a oncoming car. The grand daughter, an 11 year old 6th grader from Lompoc was killed instantly.
Just south of the Village offramp, there have been 3 accidents since the last hearing. Speed At this same area, 3 people were killed in a single car accident the year before. 3 adults traveling at 6 a..m. from SM to work in the fields near Lompoc.
