RE: LCP Update: Request to declare the Black-Crowned Night Heron and Snowy Egret nesting area on Cabrillo Boulevard, at the end of Castillo St. as Environmentally Sensitive Habitat Area (ESHA)
Dear Santa Barbara City Planning Commissioners:
Citizens Planning Association is unable to attend today’s hearing in which the Planning Commission might approve modifications requested by the Coastal Commission or CC staff and agreed to by Planning Commission staff for Santa Barbara's coastal part of the Land Use Planning document.
Citizens Planning Association has been made aware that there are concerns about the nesting birds that are in the vicinity of the proposed Splash Pool planned near Las Banos Pool. According to the information we have received, the trees on Cabrillo are nesting sites from April through September, as noted on the breeding bird records going back to 2004. BCNH and Snowy Egrets are federally protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
CPA supports the idea of a new and improved Splash Pool, but we hope the Planning & Recreation Departments will work to protect the nesting sites. The request to establish an ESHA should be considered.
