CPA Letter Regarding Mission Canyon Bridge Safety Project

To: Mayor Murillo and City Council Members

Re: Contract for design options and environmental review for the Mission Canyon Bridge Safety Project.

On behalf of the Board and membership of the Citizens Planning Association, I urge you to approve the proposed consultant contract for design of improvements to the Mission Creek Bridge and adjacent walkways. This is the logical next step to identify workable solutions to a potentially dangerous roadway corridor in an historic district that straddles the City/County border.

On May 12, 2018, members of the CPA Board of Directors were taken on a walkabout through this corridor with members of the Mission Historical Trail Association. We saw firsthand the many safety issues for pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles. On foot, joined at one point by a school or youth group, we saw the pressing need to address these safety issues. Thanks to Google/GPS, much traffic is now directed 154 to 192 and Mission Canyon Road.

We also saw the iconic historic resources along this corridor that must be recognized, respected and preserved. With this contract, Santa Barbara city has the opportunity to move forward on both critical safety issues and historic preservation.

CPA requests that you approve this contract for this historically rich area. Then, we can all look forward to draft design options for review by the Historic Landmarks Commission.
